The Mission: Good Nutrition crew has "gone on the road" to the Daniel Boone School District.

Today's Cafeteria -
Beth takes a tour of the Middle School's state-of-the-art cafeteria with the district's Director of Dining Services, Andrew Chandler. Listen while Andrew explains how students benefit from the huge variety of healthy choices provided in their cafeteria. Join the tour as they visit the salad bar stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, the burger Zone and Pizza Zone, where whole wheat rolls and crusts are used to prepare a healthy alternative to traditional burgers and pizza. You won't find fried foods in this school district!

What is Family and Consumer Science?  Unlike Home Economics class of 30 years ago, today's Family and Consumer Science classes are attended by both girls and boys. Susan Fleagle explains how these classes are no longer gender specific, since it is necessary for all students to be educated in nutition and fitness. With the many type of family situations in today's society, it is important for kids to be prepared with the skills and information needed to make healthy choices. Tune in to hear ideas on how to keep your pantry stocked with healthy choices.

Cooking with Kids - Join Beth as she visits with teacher Jaime Leiderman and Oliva and Cole, elementary students who attend her after-school cooking class. They will show us how cooking can be fun and easy. Jaime gives tips on how to get your kids involved in the kitchen and that it's never too early to get started. Andrew Chandler, Director of Dining Services
Andrew Chandler is the Director of Dining Services at Daniel Boone Area School District.  An employee of Sodexho School Services, Andrew has been at Daniel Boone for almost a year now. He spent almost three years at Bethlehem Area School District learning how to run an effective kindergarten through 12th grade food service operation. Andrew is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America as a Chef and Food Service manager with certification in Food Safety.

Andrew's focus continues to be in the area of Health and Wellness. As part of Daniel Boone's Wellness Committee, he has opened the door for a partnership with Reading Hospital. That partnershp will bring trained dieticians to the district to help educate students, faculty and parents on proper nutrition and any other areas of concern.

Away from the job, Andrew enjoys sports and spending time with his wife and their two young children. Feeding children a variety of healthy and great tasting foods continues to be a challenge not only on the job, but at home as well.

Susan Fleagle, Family and Consumer Science Teacher
Susan Fleagle is a Family and Consumer Science teacher at Daniel Boone Middle School. The Family and Consumer Science curriculum is a blending of both Social Science, which concentrates on the well-being of individuals, families, and communities and Natural Science which explores nutrition, cooking and fitness. She became a teacher after being a stay-at-home mom to raise her two daughters who are now 16 and 17. She knows first hand the demands of raising healthy children and has been able to turn her passion for the care and well-being of children into a teaching position. In addition to the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders Susan sees each day, she also helps teach second graders the importance of healthful food choices and active lifestyles. She believes it is never too early to make healthy choices.

Jaime Leiderman, Kindergarten Teacher
Jaime Leiderman is a Kindergarten Teacher with the Daniel Boone Area School District. Jaime is a graduate of Immaculata University where she received a degree in Family Consumer Sciences. Realizing her love of learning and children, she also received certification to teach elementary, early childhood education, and special education. Currently she is working on her Master's Degree at Kutztown University.

Using what she knows about young children and what she learned about nutrition, Jaime has developed after-school cooking programs for young children that teach basic information about eating healthy, food preparation, and the importance of being fit. She feels that it is important to educate children on nutrition at an early age.

Her interests are reading, gardening, running and spending time with her family.
